Sammy Davis, is out to prove again "Yes, I Can." He's doing two specials, one Thanksgiving eve with children, for children, another on Feb. 1 with Sinatra, Edie Adams, and Joey Heatherton. During that period, he starts his weekly TV series; will co-produce with Joe Levine and star in a movie titled "Adam”; and does "Golden Boy" at the same time. He thinks he s a centipede. And between times, he'll fly to London for a command performance and bow to the queen Nov. 8...

Dean Martin Show Happy Idea in TV
by Larry Wolters
September 17, 1965

THE DEAN MARTIN SHOW, which arrived last night with a load of [altho not loaded] entertainers, gives every promise of becoming another variety-comedy-musical hit, a happy addition to such regulars as Andy Williams, Perry Como, Danny Kaye, Ed Sullivan, and the Hollywood Palace.

Frank Sinatra, of yachting fame, was aboard, surrounded by a bright and lively sextet, but without Mia Farrow.

Also contributing to the merriment were Danny Thomas, Eddie Fisher, Steve Allen, Jack Jones, and a nifty dancer, Joey Heatherton.

Bob Newhart did one of his wittiest monologs involving Superman's problems in getting his space suit back from the cleaners.

A lot of fun on the Dean Martin show and we will predict that it becomes a winner.

Bob Hope declares this Christmas a trip was the closest to war he s been since he got mixed up with those bombs in Africa in '43: "But we felt safer than last year. There was so much mystery about everything then. Now we’re entrenched in Viet Nam. To see our supplies brought in-well, we’re the big daddy of the world." "How did you ever fall off the stage while taking a bow? That's the first one you ever missed." "We had three elephants on the side of the stage. I looked over and said, 'So that s where the Republicans are hiding.' Then turned 'round, missed the first step, and was headed for oblivion when security man Robert Raft caught me. You should have seen my ankle. It was as big as my head, and you know how big that is." He raved about his troupe: "Carroll Baker did a magnificent job-no temperament and really took a beating. Joey Heatherton danced the Watusi with the fellows-she s star material. Jack Jones was a bit baffled at first but he caught on fast and was a smash."

JOEY HEATHERTON got a special dog tag from Durward Kirby's son, Randy. It reads: "Heatherton, Joey 36-22-35-blood type: warm. Xms 1965 Randy." He opened and closed on Broadway in a play with his dad. Joey was in Viet Nam with Hope. . . .

The Golddiggers - Beginning June 20, N B C replaces Dean Martin's show with this summer sub, featuring leggy Joey Heatherton and Frank Sinatra Jr. heading a cast of young entertainers in a music-variety hour keyed to a 1930-ish theme. Paul Lynde, the guy with all those blindingly white teeth, is a regular.

ELSEWHERE.JN VEGAS: Liza is the only female headliner on the Strip. But there’s lots going on. . . . Glen Campbell continues to pack in audiences, one-quarter of them kids, at the International. . . . Tony Bennett is Tony Bennett at Caesars Palace but Joey Heatherton is a real surprise. She's not just a dumb blonde-she is a fantastic dancer, and can even sing.

ROYAL WELCOME: New York's Plaza Hotel is going all out for Joey Heatherton's opening in the Persian Room Sept. 9, which will officially open the New York social season. Instead of sending limousines for invited celebrities, the hotel has hired forty of those romantic horse-and-buggies to deliver the guests to the Plaza. Should be quite a sight and everyone is praying for clear weather.

NEW MM, Looks like Joey Heatherton is a strong contender for the Marilyn Monroeish type role in the movie version of "After the Fall." In the meantime, Joey continues to break attendance records at nightclubs, most recently at Harrah's Reno. She opens in the Empire Room of Chicago's Palmer House on Feb. 2 for two weeks.

We'd be happy to join Drury Lane star Elke Sommer playing tennis, but Joey Heatherton will have to be on her own while in town. This luscious gal, who opens tomorrow at the Empire Room, maintains a daily jogging schedule of two miles, equipped with her own Olympic running suit and shoes. Friends have clocked her at 7:52 for the mile; not fast, but for a gal of her historic proportions, pretty fancy!

... After telling you Joey Heatherton jogs the mile in 7:52, now we learn Elke Sommer does the same in 6:12. Since Joey opens tonight at the Empire Room and Elke at Drury Lane Feb. 9, maybe the two beauties can get together while in town and jog a little.... Incidentally, Joey has rejected an offer to star in a Broadway show, "Kiss, Kiss." Says it’s not her style.

ALSO JOEY: Everything's coming up roses for Joey Heatherton, who was such a smash at the Waldorf Astoria in New York that she s already been signed to open their 1973 fall season.
Not only that, but Joey was given a tidy sum, above and beyond her salary, because of the tremendous business she did at the Empire Room. She's back in Hollywood now and this week tapes her guest starring spot on the Perry Como Special, which will air later this fall on CBS. Also in the romance department, Joey and Frank Sinatra have been seen about town here and in Palm Springs. Keep your eye on this new twosome.

Who can top the enduring, irresistible charm of Perry Como singing "I've Got You Under My Skin" or "Without A Song"??? There's nothing that takes the place of class.... Backstage in his dressing room Perry reminisced about how he got started in the big time-with Ted Weems' orchestra in Chicago. His special lady guest of the evening was Joey Heatherton. They're doing a TV special together.

WORDS OF ADVICE: Joey Heatherton, just closing up a fantastically successful engagement at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, told Diana Ross-who follows her into the Circus Maximus-to bring ski clothes and a fur coat. Seems that it’s freezing cold back stage because of the huge ice rink built for the Ice Follies, which were on the bill with Joey and will remain to keep Diana company. That's showbiz.

JOEY HEATHERTON, who’s appearing with Shecky Greene at the Riviera Hotel, really is beginning to come into her own as a singer and dancer. After Wednesday's opening performance. Shecky said: "I feel a star was born here tonight" and the audience, myself included, agreed. In the dressing room after the show, Shecky and Joey were surrounded by well-wishers including Dustin Hoffman and Sally Marr, the late Lenny Bruce's mother.

BOB HOPE NEVER PLAYER a Las Vegas hotel because he didn't like the town s image ... but places change and so do people. Now that Hope said he would play Vegas, he is being sought after by all the big hotels. [Personally. I think the MGM Grand is the hotel Hope is, most likely to choose]. Hope was talking about a Las Vegas booking to re- porters attending the NBC-RCA dinner party at Harry Chad- dick s Palm Springs Tennis Club to promote his Nov. 13 TV special. "If the stagehands' strike in Burbank continues," Frank Lieberman [Hope's press agent] said, "NBC most likely will fly Joey Heatherton, Redd Foxx, Don Rickles. and Karen and Richard Carpenter to Palm Springs and tape the show here."
