A Football Player You'd Love to Touch
By Norma Lee Browning
April 1, 1973

Joey Heatherton has a secret you d probably never guess in a thousand years. She's the only female member of a touch football team.

The rest of the team is made up of dancers and other professional guys I know. We play in parks and high school athletic fields. And on the road, we ve been known to play on the lawn of the hotel we re staying at. It's fantastic exercise," Joey said quite seriously.

Maybe touch football is the kind of extra-curricular activity you d expect from someone named Joey. (Especially when you know she was married to football star Lance Rentzel for three years.) But if you ve seen this particular Joey, you know that she looks like anything but a boy. Her real name is Johanna (which is also her mother s name) and it was her kid brother who started calling her Joey.

There are times when I wish my name was something else. I think here are some people out there who don't take me seriously because of my name. And here in Hollywood I've had another problem. I've been working since I was 13 (she achieved national prominence as a regular on the Perry Como

TV Show) and there are a lot of producers here in town who have a paternal attitude toward me. And who takes kids seriously?"

But in spite of these handicaps. Joey has worked (and earned) a great deal during the past year. She has played the top clubs such as the Empire Room of the Waldorf in New York. She made her debut as a Vegas headliner at Caesars Palace. She has a long-term MGM recording contract. She's done more TV than we can list, plus the movie, "Bluebeard," with Richard Burton. (The movie was a bomb but Joey was excellent.) But she s still looking for that special project that could catapult her to stardom on the screen.

"I've never had a chance to show my full range as an actress. Besides all those people who take the paternal attitude, there are all those others who only think of me as a sex pot. (Can you really blame them?) However. I'm still hoping to be given a good dramatic script one day, either for movies or TV, and I'll try to meet the challenge."

In the meantime, whenever she wants to relax and get her mind off work. Joey can always pick up the phone and say, Touch football. ?"
